Pink Floyd w/ Stéphane Grappelli - “Wish You Were Here”
Do you think you can tell?
And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?
How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We’re just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have we found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.
So the story goes that this jazz violinist, Stéphane Grappelli, was recording in the studio beneath Pink Floyd when they were working on Wish You Were Here. They thought it might be cool to have a violin at the end so they talked him into doing it (and apparently got taken for a decent chunk of change) and he went to town on this unreleased version. Kind of unreleased. Apparently the violin is still in the mix on the actual album version, but so low they decided to not even credit him (dont worry, he still got his money).
